Lutheran services began at RAF Feltwell under Chaplain Paul Sherouse. The average attendance in the first year was 25. The congregation quickly took up the challenge to provide a permanent Lutheran presence within Suffolk and Norfolk. Worship services have been held at both RAF Feltwell and RAF Lakenheath while preparations were made to move off-base.
The congregation started a special fund to facilitate this exciting mission. It also opened a partnership with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of England and developed a sister – congregation relationship with Resurrection Lutheran Congregation in Cambridge. |
2001 |
In 2001 the average attendance was 64.Chaplain Sherouse was transferred and the plan began in earnest to secure the congregation’s first resident pastor. During 2001 and 2002 the congregation was supported by the pastor of Resurrection (Cambridge) and theological students from Westfield House (Cambridge) while the infrastructure of parsonage, congregation organization and worship place were established. |
November 30, 2002 |
Pastor George Samiec from the Lutheran Church of Australia was installed as the first resident pastor.The congregation adopted the name Ascension Lutheran Church. |
September 1, 2003 |
Ascension was received as a member congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of England. The first place of worship off-base is the Methodist Church, London Road, in Brandon (opp Tesco). Services are held at 9:00am every Sunday. |
October 1, 2004 |
Ascension hosted the 50th synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of England and clearly demonstrated that its members were active in their church involvement. It was a very successful synod and encouraged all Lutherans in Great Britain to go ‘forward in faith’. |
October 30, 2005 |
Ascension began her own mission in Norwich. This was ‘mothballed’ in January 2007 but is ready to recommence if requested. |
July 2006 |
Ascension began a second mission in Ipswich. |
August 15, 2009 |
Steve Edge was ordained into the ministry of the Lutheran Church at Brandon on Saturday 15th August. At the same service he was installed as Assistant Minister (NSM) in Brandon by the Chairman of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of England, the Rev. Dr Reginald Quirk. Lutheran clergy from Cambridge and London joined local minister, the Rev. George Samiec in the ordination. Steve acted as the Assistant Minister untilSeptember 2012, when he received a call to minister at a Lutheran church in Sunderland. Steve and his wife Debbie currently live in Sunderland where Steve is the pastor at St Timothy’s Lutheran Church.
