Give Me a Drink (Third Sunday in Lent)

8 March 2026

There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) John 4:7-9

Greetings in the name of Jesus!

Jesus’ words “Give me a drink” express the wonder of the incarnation: that God became man, of God drinking the water He created, asking help from one of His fallen creatures and using the occasion to impart immortality to a mortal. Jesus could have helped Himself, but he didn’t. He could have taken it without asking. But He asked to open her heart through her ears and to help her receive and appreciate the gift He brings of the Holy Spirit, the gift that was poured into our hearts in Baptism, the Giver Himself and Who keeps giving.
