As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him. And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. Matthew 9:9-10

Greetings in the name of Jesus!

As a tax-collector, Matthew would have tracked Jesus’ movements and assessed his tax potential. He would also have listened intently to figure out what his comings and goings were all about and that’s when the unexpected happened: The Word of God breezed unawares into Matthew’s stagnant life bringing a breath of fresh air, the very breath of life’s fullness. Matthew heard Jesus reiterate God’s Law. Thou shalt not steal weighed heave on him. But He also heard Him say how God’s nature is always to have mercy on repentant sinners.
