And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! Greetings in the name of Jesus!

Relaxation and celebration only mimic God’s gifts of rest and rejoicing. Filling one’s time with leisure and pleasure is often an attempt to Photoshop or whitewash an unhappy life into a better looking one. Wholly resting in God means forgetting what lies behind and looking at life’s whole picture in a new light through the gracious eyes of our Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer Who freely gives a plentiful harvest of good and profitable things for our salvation and a life worth living.
