The great cost of our redemption (Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost)

13 September 2026

Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. And should you not have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you? Matthew 18:32-33

Greetings in the name of Jesus!

Jesus’ parable of the unforgiving servant is not a subjective exercise on how much we think we owe or deserve. It is a statement showing how far in the red we are by the king who came to settle accounts with us. It is a comparison between the forgiving economy of God’s Kingdom and our tendency to withhold forgiveness. It also shows the high cost and our utter necessity of our bondservant Jesus to free us from our debt. Redemption from sin is inextricably linked to God’s one and only Son who, in His mercy, God did not spare but gave up so that whoever believes in Him may not perish but have eternal life.
